Cleaned out my IAC for the first time today, then after I replaced it the truck idled rough, fluctuating between about 200-750 rpm, feeling like it wanted to stall.

I unplugged the fuse for the PCM, left it out for half an hour, plugged it back in, and now it's idling like butter, much better than before.

Freaked out for a minute, I thought I screwed something up, but no worries. Seems like it just needed to re-learn to idle with a clean IAC. Phew. Thanks for the write-up.

Nice and clean:

Make sure you use MAF cleaner and only that! You got to be real careful when it comes to cleaning the MAF because the sensor is very fragile. So take your time

thats why i didnt clean it today because i didnt have any maf to clean it with. almost 200,000 miles and its never been cleaned so i think i should notice a difference. i was a little worried cleaning my iac with carb cleaner but i cleaned my throttle body with it so i thought it would be okay. and it was and it idles smoother now so it all worked out, thanks man!

Nice and clean:

Hi everyone!
First post here. Just got my early birthday present from the wife: 2003 Ford Ranger Edge Supercab 4x2 3.0L.
Immediately started reading this forum and already fixed the blinking airbag light (turned out to be the connector behind driver's seat. Flashing code was 4-6). Unplugged, cleaned, plugged back in - no more flashing airbag light.

Now, on to the idle air sensor: truck's idling a bit uneven when cold. Once it warms up a bit - it gets better, but i can still hear that its uneven. Put a SnapOn scanner to it and it showed idle RPMs between 670 and 730. And it also gave a code that this sensor is faulty.
So i tried to clean it yesterday according to this walkthrough.
It did help a little but i can still hear/feel it.

Question: should i have unplugged that PCM fuse like the poster above?
Which one is it exactly? Is there a number for this fuse? I don't have a manual but i did find a picture/diagram of the fuse box under the hood.
Also, is it too late to do this when a scanner is showing what its showing? If its mentioning this sensor - replacing it is the only fix, right?

If so - which one do i put in? From what i found all the new ones have this round thingie on top, that looks like a watch battery. Flat, cylindrical shape. My existing sensor doesn't have it. Is that ok?
Is there a preferred brand that you guys may recommend? Or any will do?

Thanks in advance!
Slava.

I'll do this the same time I get to the throttlebody cleaning and MAF. Gotta get better gas mileage somehow!!!!!!

for the 4 cyl 2.3 l engines do people take off their whole throttle body since the 2nd bolt on the iac is in such a tight spot? i wasnt able to turn the wrench at all after putting it on the bolt.

I did some internal cleaning to my truck this past week. Seafoamed it, cleaned the MAF sensor and yesterday cleaned the throttle body and ICV. My question is this, after I cleaned the ICV with carb/throttle cleaner I used MAF cleaner on it last then reinstalled it and unplugged the negative battery cable all night because when I test drove the truck the idle would stay around 2k for maybe 5-7 seconds, then go down to 1k for a few seconds then finally limber down to 6-700. My question is this; how long does it take the computer to relearn the idle so I am not revving so high when I let off the gas..... or is this actually a normal thing and mine was just really dirty?

I should have taken pictures yesterday of the throttle body, it was black in the inside and a little bit of "grime" on the edges of the round flap.

Bump, on the way home today the truck still idles way too high, it also feels like it is dumping fuel in the engine like its going out of style. I let off the peddle a few times and it never dropped the speed. I am making a long trip tomorrow so any help tonight would be grateful. I can't imagine that the computer would need to take a super long time to readjust itself, granted it's only been a day but jeez!

----------

Also, I don't know if this matters but I used q-tips when I cleaned it and did get up into the plastic part, did I break it in the process? I felt something go up and down when I was cleaning it. I never touched it with my hands at all.

Alright, I went out and cleaned the ICV once more with MAF cleaner, I was able to lift the plastic thing and clean under it some more, before I installed it back onto the truck I plugged it in and just set it on the engine (on my glove) and it was open, then the truck died and it closed so I am pretty sure I didn't mess anything up. It was still a bit of a high idle but I am done messing with it for now. I will be driving over 300 miles tomorrow so the computer should relearn by then.

On a side note I noticed that when I pushed the throttle down so it "closed" more the engine idle went down to what I would consider normal. I have read to leave the screw alone so for now I will until I her what other have to say. I am more or less just baking on the computer still needing to learn the new clean intake, lol.

While I was messing with the throttle I sprayed some lubricant on the ball that that throttle cable sits on, can't hurt right?

Check/clean your throttle body.
